Electric vehicle charging stations are becoming more common in the UK, as drivers opt for zero-emission cars that are both practical and cost-effective. EV chargers can be installed at home or in workplaces to provide convenient and reliable charging solutions, with the added benefit of being much cheaper than filling up with petrol or diesel. But with a growing number of installers coming into the market, how can you find one who is both experienced and trustworthy?
EV charging installers are electricians who specialise in installing EV charging points. They will typically have experience with all types of electric vehicles and be familiar with all the different types of EV chargers on the market. In addition to their expertise in this area, they will also be able to advise customers on the best solution for their needs and recommend suitable units. They will be able to carry out a full installation service, including locating a suitable outlet, laying cabling and connecting it to the fuse box using an isolator switch, as well as testing that everything is working correctly.
The majority of EV charging installers in the UK will have completed an approved training course before becoming qualified to carry out the work. This course will typically include an overview of the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation, and cover topics such as the safety of electric vehicle charging systems, the different types of chargers available, and electrical requirements (e.g. RCD protection). Some EV charging courses will also offer a qualification at the end, so that you can prove to your customers that you are qualified to install EV charging points.
As the use of electric vehicles continues to grow, more and more EV charging installers will be required to help with the installation of these units. For installers who already have the necessary skills, it may be possible to convert their existing Part P qualification into one for EV charging installations. However, in many cases it is better to start from scratch and complete a dedicated EV charge point installer training course.
Before you choose an EV charging installer, make sure they are registered with a Part P scheme provider and are accredited under the Domestic Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant Scheme or Workplace Charging Station Scheme (previously known as OLEV). Anyone who was originally authorised to carry out domestic EV charger installations under the EVHS will need to re-apply for OLEV authorisation if they wish to continue offering this service.
